Prolotherapy has been used by physicians around the world for decades and has been shown effective in treating musculoskeletal conditions such as ligament sprains, tennis/golfer's elbow, back and neck pain along with muscle and tendon tears and shoulder, knee and other joint pain.
Prolotherapy works by causing a low grade inflammatory response at the injection site, activating fibroblasts to the area, which in turn synthesize precursors to mature collagen and thus reinforce connective tissue. It has been well documented that direct exposure of fibroblasts to growth factors causes new cell growth and collagen deposition. Inflammation causes secondary growth factor elevation. Biopsy studies have shown increased thickening of the ligament and strengthening of the tendon or ligament after prolotherapy injection.
